About Riverable Australia
Riverable Australia was created to empower paddlers, kayakers, canoeists, native sportfish anglers, and wild swimmers across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory, and the ACT. We provide the essential outdoor answer: "Is the river safe to paddle, fish, or swim today, or is it in flood?"
Our Open Hydrology Data Stack
We ingest and synthesize observational data from authoritative open scientific and governmental bodies:
- Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) Water Data Online: Real-time river levels (metres) and discharge flows (cumecs, m³/s) from thousands of automated telemetry stations nationwide via Sensor Observation Service (SOS 2.0).
- State Water Authorities: Collaborating with WaterNSW, Goulburn-Murray Water, Sunwater, Water Corporation WA, DEW SA, and Hydro Tasmania.
- Open-Meteo & BoM Weather Models: High-resolution atmospheric forecasts, hourly air temperatures, wind gust velocities, and catchment rainfall accumulation.
- OpenStreetMap (Overpass API): Public boat ramps, canoe access points, and camping reserves along waterways.
- RainViewer Doppler Radar: Real-time high-resolution radar precipitation overlays for tracking incoming weather fronts.
Provisional Telemetry & River Safety
Real-time telemetry published by the Bureau of Meteorology is provisional and subject to continuous quality control. Natural river systems can change rapidly following heavy rainfall, weir discharges, or catchment runoff.
Always check official BoM flood warnings, inspect weirs, snags, and river sections before entering, and follow outdoor safety best practices (including wearing a properly certified PFD lifejacket and being aware of submerged timber hazards).
